Description
Vergina Sun (otherwise known as the Star of Vergina) is an ancient Greek symbol depicted in various archaeological finds, such as vessels and coins, but became widely known for its depiction in the golden shrine found in 1977 in a Royal Tomb attributed to the Macedonian Dynasty of Philip II and Alexander the Great.
This sun is used in Greece as a symbol of the region of Macedonia, as well as in its individual administrative divisions. The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia also used this symbol arbitrarily for its state flag, from 1992 to 1995, provoking strong reactions from Greece and Cyprus. Following the reactions, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia withdrew it with the Interim Agreement of 1995 and modified its flag based on the original in shaped sun.
