Description
The Ionic style is one of the three ancient classical architectural styles. It is classified between the Doric and the Corinthian style. The main distinguishing elements of these rhythms are the frieze, the capitals and the colonnades of the ancient buildings. The Ionian rhythm begins to appear from the beginning of the 6th BC. century, and in fact on the coasts of Ionia Asia Minor, the Aegean islands and Attica. The name comes from the Ionians. After the penetration of the Dorians during the descent of the Dorians, their appearance shifted mainly to the east, to the Aegean islands and to the west coast of Asia Minor. In the area of Athens, however, they prevailed. One of the roots of the Ionian style is found in the stone structures of the Cyclades, as we observe in the Ionian style presented in Athens. A general feature, however, is the exceptional peculiarity, that is, the freedom that the various architects had to develop their own local style. Examples are the local style of Samos or Ephesus with different bases on their columns. Later the Ionian rhythm was standardized and spread.
