Description
The Lion of Amphipolis is a work of epitaph sculpture of the 4th century BC, a monument of war glory and action. According to Professor Dimitris Lazaridis, it was erected in honor of Laomedon from Lesvos, one of the most remarkable triarchs of Alexander the Great who settled in Amphipolis, while according to one version it was located at the top of the Casta Tomb, a view that was disputed. Recent excavations there have uncovered parts of the sculpture’s ridge as well as the foundations of the first pedestal, at the top of the hill.
