Description

Sculpture of Hermes. Hermes of Praxiteles is today considered an authentic work of the Athenian sculptor. It dates back to around 340 BC, in the transition from the late classical to the early Hellenistic sculpture. The statue due to its beauty is the ideal image of classical beauty and sculpture and that is why within a few years of its discovery it became famous all over the world. It was discovered on May 8, 1877 in the nave of the temple of Hera in Olympia by German archaeologists and is on display today at the Archaeological Museum of Olympia. The excavation began in 1875 after a contract between the Greek and German State which was made a year earlier. For the first time in archeology, the findings were not allowed, but on the contrary, they would be the property of the Greek state. Thus, the purpose of the excavation was scientific knowledge and not the acquisition of museum findings
